My Favourite Covers: Alice's Adventure's in Wonderland

I love both of the Alice stories by Lewis Carrol and adore most of the movie adaptations (not to mention all the art and jewellry that's been inspired by it!) but the copy I had was a little sad and boring considering the magic that lay between the pages. It was a copy I'd bought for a class when I had to read it and it was one of those bland modern covers with that ghastly laminate-y covers that ages terrible. My boyfriend bought me this copy for my birthday along with a copy of Charles Dicken's Great Expectations that was from the same special Penguin Classic edition. I assume these are in the States as well since they're on your Amazon site, but for awhile they were absolutely everywhere here in Australia, but I don't think they're actually that popular (even though they're fairly cheap for a hardcover) since they always seem to have an excess on display! I love the simple block colour background on the fabric hardcover and the quirky little screen/wood print style symbol used across it that relates to the specific story in someway. The pattern reminds me of flock wallpaper and is welcomed unique addition to my bookshelves!

  1. i agree with you! These new classic editions are lovely AND they are available in the States. We carried them in my bookstore, and even over the winter holidays they had disappointing sales. Can't figure out why, since the designs are super and price is good for a hardcover, as you say.

  2. That's such a strange cover. I like it. :)

My great-aunt gave me a copy of this book when I was a kid. It's always been one of my favorite kids books.

  3. I am going to be honest. I don't like Alice In Wonderland. It scares me. Particularly the cat which is quite funny since I loved him in the Thursday Next books. I do love these covers though. I would happily collect all of my favourites.

  4. When I'm much less in debt (thanks, student loans!) I'm going to start setting aside money to build up my classics library. I have a lot of them already, but they're falling apart or just have terrible covers. I'd really like to get some of the nice newer editions they have out there so that I can have a nicer looking shelf.

  5. @as the crow... If they weren't mainly titles I already had in my collection I would jump at the chance to collect them all. I have no idea why people don't enjoy them as much as I think they should!

@Karen, I haven't read the Thursday next books, would you recommend them?

@Gabe, It's a pity you don't live in my city because at the bookfest I refered to in the other post they had stacks of leather bound editions of classics for really, really cheap. They were obviously parts of bigger sets so they wouldn't all match but there were in fantastic condition and only a couple of dollars each. There were 'modern' classics like Lord of the flies, old Greek classics, Russian classics, books by the Brontes and Austen, and a collection of about 12 which were part of a complete collection of Joseph Conrad's novels and shortstories.
