Favourite covers: My uncle Oswald by Roald Dahl

I love the combination of the white background against the assault of colours in the image and title/author's credits on this one. That and the wicked retro font type! It's also nice to own a Roald Dahl book that isn't a boring plain cover (for his adult fiction) or illustrated by Quentin Blake. Not that I'm hating on QB, I love his illustrations but this cover is a rare occurrence and i'm loving it!

My Favourite covers: Juliet, Naked by Nick Hornby

Like Rabbit Redux the other week I probably wouldn't have picked up this cover if it wasn't for the positive combo of a low, low price and this wicked cover. While I love the front cover it's really the back cover that appeals the greatest. I'm not sure exactly what it is but I love when text on a cover takes up the entire surface space. Plus the combo of blue and hot pink and that 70s-esque font is simply fantastic! The title/author credit arrangement on the front reminds me of an album cover from the 70s by some famous band that I can't think of right now!

My Favourite Covers: Alice's Adventure's in Wonderland

I love both of the Alice stories by Lewis Carrol and adore most of the movie adaptations (not to mention all the art and jewellry that's been inspired by it!) but the copy I had was a little sad and boring considering the magic that lay between the pages. It was a copy I'd bought for a class when I had to read it and it was one of those bland modern covers with that ghastly laminate-y covers that ages terrible. My boyfriend bought me this copy for my birthday along with a copy of Charles Dicken's Great Expectations that was from the same special Penguin Classic edition. I assume these are in the States as well since they're on your Amazon site, but for awhile they were absolutely everywhere here in Australia, but I don't think they're actually that popular (even though they're fairly cheap for a hardcover) since they always seem to have an excess on display! I love the simple block colour background on the fabric hardcover and the quirky little screen/wood print style symbol used across it that relates to the specific story in someway. The pattern reminds me of flock wallpaper and is welcomed unique addition to my bookshelves!

My Favourite covers: John Updike's Rabbit Redux

I came across this book during one of my forays amongst the expansive Brisbane book sale known as Book Fest. To be perfectly honest, if I hadn't been so attracted to the cover (and the price at $2) I probably wouldn't have picked it up. Nothing against John Updike but I already had about 10 books in my arms and a desperately low bank balance, so if this had been some kind of photographic cover or without the dust cover I would have left it for someone else. I love the red, white and blue stripes across the cover and then the slightly out of kilter lines in the circle surrounding the title box. That black title and author box almost looks out of place, like it's an older more traditional cover, but I love how it juxtaposes with the trippy lines and the little moon (planet?) up in the top right corner.

My Favourite Cover : Bram Stoker's Dracula

I still haven't actually read this yet (I know, I know!) but as soon as I saw this cover I simply had to have it! The cover art is done by the fashion illustrator Ruben Toledo, who also designed covers for a multitude of other classic texts as part of a Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition set. I've also seen the Alice in Wonderland cover he did and thought it was Divine. It wasn't because of Toledo that I bought this edition (I didn't know who he was till I cracked open the cover and saw the little bio), but because I was immediately attracted to the orange and pink cover with the black silhouette drawings on both front and back. The pages are also slightly shorn and uneven and when combined with the paper cover it almost feels like a personalised manuscript rather than one of those mass produced bland editions you see in high school libraries (no offence!). It probably isn't everyone's cup of tea, but it certainly is mine and I can't wait to read it!
