Fanart Friday: Cinna from The Hunger Games

Cinna was easily one of my favourite characters in The Hunger Games. He was so understated and sensible, yet still managed to stand out as an individual. He had a great heart, an enviable capacity for understanding but he isn't afraid to show a little attitude when the time calls for it. Without spoiling anything, I wish he'd had a larger role in the books. Then again, perhaps if he'd been a more central character I would have tired of him, or he'd have done something obnoxious that tainted his early presence. Who could ever know? Hello everyone! I am alive, I swear! I'm a month out from my stage 2 proposal, so shit has been crazy round my way, hence the quietness on the bloggo-front! I'll hopefully manage to find time to do some reading in the next week or so, unless you're all incredibly interested in reading reviews on dry film and cultural studies text books? I'm spending the weekend down on the Gold Coast for their film festival, so at the very least I'll have some film reviews to share with you all shortly!

Fanart Friday: Dr Seuss

I loved Dr Seuss as a kid. I think we had just about the complete collection of his books, and I was always forcing my parents to read the same few over and over for our bedtime story. The stories and illustrations helped open my imagination to a world that I never would have experienced without his help. Now, as an adult, I can clearly see the impact the books have on the person I am now. I'm unashamedly weird, love blending adult with child (i.e. my ever growing collection of KidRobot Dunny toys) and take a particular pleasure in twisted rhyming schemes, bright colours, moralistic stories and slightly absurd illustrations. It's because of him (and Roald Dahl) that I take so much joy out of the work by Diana Wynne Jones, Neil Gaiman, Tim Burton and Ralph Steadman which also take on realistic situations and twist them into something slightly askew and absolutely magical. So in honour of this wonderful and creative man (I was watching Horton Hears a Who the other night, that's what sparked this choice) here are some wonderful tributes. This week, instead of focussing on a particular book or character, I'm showcasing an artist. Steven Cock-Cely is an amazing artist that I first featured in an earlier Fanart post. Fanart Friday: Neil Gaiman's Sandman

It's no secret that Nylon Admiral is a Neil Gaiman appreciation blog, but it's been taking me quite awhile to make my way through his seminal work, the Sandman graphic novel series. I'm nowhere near finished it yet (it's huge guys!) but I'm loving it more and more with each trade, especially the title character Sandman (AKA Morpheus). The characterisation in this graphic novel is phenomenal, and when you combine that with the artwork by the collection of outstanding contributing artists, it's not hard to see why this series is so well loved. Last week I finally finished reading Bram Stoker's Dracula. I know, I know, it's about time!! The book is incredibly visual and has spawned countless film, television, game and comic adaptations, as well as influencing the representation of vampires in popular culture for a very, very long time. It's not hard to see why, it's mysterious, threatening, pervasive, enticing and a little bit sexy. Here are a selection of works which, while perhaps not all specifically based of Bram Stoker's Dracula, depict various elements of the classic horror novel.

Rubeus Hagrid... Need I expand on why this hirsute gentlemen deserves his very own Fanart post? From his first mention in Harry Potter I fell head over heels in love with Hagrid, and not once in seven books did he let me down. He's kind, thoughtful, loving, loyal, funny, protective, strong, intelligent (in his own way) and terrible at keeping secrets. From his hairy suit, to his dustpan sized hands I adore this BF(half)G and am happy to share some of the most remarkable art featuring him on Deviant Art. Fanart Friday: His Dark Materials

I can't believe I hadn't chosen Philip Pullman's AMAZING trilogy His Dark Materials before this week! There are so many aspects of these novels which are incredibly visual, the northern lights, the armoured bears, the witches, the gypsies and their boats and of course, the daemons. All of these artists, though very different in approach, capture the magic and fantasy and undeniable creativity of the series. Perhaps my favourite aspect of all of these pictures, are the colours they choose to use. I can't really describe it, but they're exactly the tones and shades that perfectly fit with the mood of the story and the condition of the world Pullman created. Fanart Friday: Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

Up this week for Fanart Friday is the cult classic Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by the unique voice that is Hunter S. Thompson. This book is one of my favourites, not only because it's the book that introduced me to HST, but because it is far and away one of the most intelligent, unique, truthful and balls to the wall crazy books I've ever had the pleasure of reading. It's hard for me to imagine the actions of the book played out differently to the iconic film adaptation starring Benico Del Toro and Johnny Depp, but these fine artists managed to strip those visualisations away and simply capture the raw edge and beauty that abounds in this work.
