December and 2014 in review

Any year down guys, another whole year has zoomed by in the blink of an eye.

This year is probably the year I most noticed by study interfering with my reading. I was just so busy and so tired that I went for huge stretches where I'd only read comics or watch TV shows in my spare time. Still, while it maybe wasn't a spectacular year for a blogger it was a damn sight better than most people.

But first the December stats.

BOOKS:

DECEMBER:

What I Read:

*Hawkeye: L.A Woman (3) - Matt Fraction
*The Martian - Andy Weir
*Outlander: Cross Stitch - Diana Gabaldon
*My Friend Dahmer - Derf Backderf

Book Stats:

75% male / 25% female
100% American / 0% International
25% ebook / 25% audiobook / 50% physical
75% fiction / 25% non-fiction
50% graphic novels / 50% novels

What? How did I only read 4 books? Four books which I'm almost certain I mostly read in the last 4-5 days? I actually thought I'd nailed it again after a successful November but I must have been busier than I thought! On the plus side, all four books were great. I really enjoyed all of them and for the most part they were completely unchartered territory for me. After my first attempt at listening to The Martian I didn't think I'd be able to go back to it in this format, but the reader eventually won me over. My Friend Dahmer was a Christmas present and I don't think I'd ever seen this book before, or if I had I hadn't noticed it. And Outlander. This wasn't a book I really expected to like but I was curious enough to give it a shot (being a free book on Netgalley also helped). So yeah, successful final reads for the year!

2014:

What I read:

Number of books read: 39
Number of comics read:39
Number of pages read: 18380
Longest book read: The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt (771 pages)

Book Stats:

71% male / 29% female
67% American/ 33% International
84% fiction/ 16% non-fiction
50% graphic novels / 50% novels

Breaking my reading down into stats is something I only started this year so I've never broken my full year down like this before. I knew my percentage of lady writers would be down, but what's interesting is that the majority of fiction books I read (53%) either revolved around a female centric cast (think How to Build a Girl or Boy, Snow, Bird) or had a female primary protagonist (think Wonder Woman or Rat Queens). So my interests clearly lean me towards books about women but they're often written by men. I think it might have been my comics that skewed this percentage the most, which is an interesting occurrence on its own. I guess the boys club mentality still hasn't truly been broken through. I'd like to say that next year I'll try and read more books by women and international authors, but to be honest I tend to pick books up on a whim so I don't know if actively trying to change my stats will really work. I'm definitely going to try and buy more diversely though. When and if I read those books in anything resembling a timely matter is a completely different story though.

How did everyone else go with their reading this year? Hitting the usual highs or experiencing some road blocks? Any book resolutions for the new year or are you as lazy and ill prepared as me?

LIFE:

2014 was a busy year. I kept working on my PhD but I also made trips to the US (well, finished a trip to the US) and Japan and spent a week back home for my birthday and best friend's wedding. I hosted costume parties and movie nights and we played a tonne of boardgames. I nursed hang overs and went on road trips up the coast and Tom and I finally bought a new adult couch (i.e. not one that was 10th hand) and mattress for our bed. Lots of change but lots of progress. Wider picture wise it wasn't as great a year. There have been far too many accidents and atrocities and human rights violations across the globe. But I dunno, maybe I'm being crazy optimistic but it feels like the tide is changing. It isn't quite as easy to be a racist or sexist or homophobe and expect to get away with it. The hostage situation in Sydney the other week was a great example of that. While some people began to blame an entire group of people for the action of a single mentally ill man, the majority started the #Illridewithyou campaign and made an effort to prove that Australia is the multicultural country we say we are. Baby steps, sure, but baby steps are better than hiding our heads in the sand.

You have no idea how relieved I am to hear that you didn't hate Outlander! Everytime I saw your Goodreads progress update on Twitter, I got a little nervous, lol.

For your gender stats for comics, are you counting just the author, or both author and illustrator?

You had a busy year! And I'm glad you're remaining optimistic on your view of the world at large (a struggle, for me... I mean, a whole lot of horrible shit happened in the US this year). I hope your 2015 is magical and wonderful!

I really had no idea what to expect. I'd heard mumblings from a few friends about there being a tonne of rape and abuse so I think I went in with incredibly low expectations, haha. But I did really enjoy it.

For the comics I just counted the writers. It got too messy trying to add in the ethnicity or gender of the artists, especially when you have to decide if that counts for cover artists and colourists etc etc. So authors only.

I hope your 2015 is amazing too!
Wait, studying makes it hard to do other things that aren't tv? TELL ME MORE! But no, for reals, omg it's so hard (that's what she said...) anyway... YAY reading/life yearly wrap up posts!! I very much enjoy these. Hope 2015 is EXTRA AMAZING (and involves a trip to see meeeee!!!)

I am 100% hoping I can make the trip to the UK this year around June/July. Otherwise hopefully I'll manage it around the new year. There's that pesky money business that keeps shutting down all my plans, but I should hopefully be able to save some money when I start teaching this semester.
TV makes it so hard to read. Even bad TV (I spent a good chuck of yesterday watching Catfish). I hadn't thought to look at stories with a female protagonist that are writen by dudes. I wonder what that would look like for my reading. And vice versa I suppose.

I agree with your optimism for the future. Yeah, the news makes it clear that things have been shitty this year BUT I actually think there's a silver lining to that. I'm sure all the shitty things with black people essentially being killed by cops with impunity has been happening for a while (you know, cos stats say so) but now this is being covered. People are taking notice of it.

I totally agree. There definitely seems to be a greater backlash across the board whenever the latest controversy/atrocity happens. Although sometimes I wonder if that's mostly due to me living on the internet. Am I in a bubble that makes it seem more reported on, or is it actually getting more news time? Although I guess with Twitter etc it doesn't really matter whether the news programs are picking up the story if the majority of people are finding out about it elsewhere.

Catfish is a guilty pleasure of mine. The hosts are so problematic, but I cannot change the channel if it comes on.
I think I'm hearing about more of the backlash being on the internet BUT while it may not be as virulent on on the news, the coverage is certainly happening.

I don't know what it is about Catfish but I can't turn away. And while I think both hosts are pretty terrible, considering what they're doing, I sort of love Max. He feels like he is the voice of everyone watching. "This person is TOTALLY not a model, are you dumb?" I saw one episode where the guy said he did a reverse Google image search, and there was a look of fear on Nev's face that said "We'll be out of a job soon."
Yeah it's always surprising to me how little the Catfishees seem to know about reverse image searching or basic googling. I would totally get it if they were all a little older so they weren't used to the idea of people lying online, but if you're 24 you should 100% be well versed enough in internet horror stories to distrust anyone with limited facebook friends/contact or who can't access a webcam.

Max is amazing. Nev is always trying to cautiously tip toe around things and Max just blurts it out. He has zero tact, which I really adore.
I'd be interested to see some stats on the people who are on the show and get Catfished (cos I have actually seen a couple where the person was, at least as far as they showed, the people they claimed to be). Age, race, socioeconomic status, and see if there are any similarities.
Yesss, I want research papers on Catfish!

I saw one episode where they were both catfishing each other, and the girl (who had been the one who contacted the show) was so angry but was completely unable to see that she did the exact same thing. Her lies were apparently justified while his weren't. That was an especially fascinating episode.
I don't think I've seen that one but it sounds ammaaaaaaaazing. Though my fav is the girl that was catfishing her cousin cos 3 years prior he called her fat. And she was the one that called the show.
Whaaaaaaat. How does that even make sense in her brain? Weird x1000
I haaaated Outlander so much.
But anyway. What a big year! It's definitely flown by.

It was your updates on Goodreads which made me worried about reading it at all! I mentioned this to Sarah, but I went in with crazy low expectations and I think that helped a lot. It was not at all what I was expecting and while I liked it, I can totally understand why people wouldn't care for it.

P.S So happy to see you back and blogging!
